Creative retreats, a Parisian apartment, and a historic Chinese granary turned cultural landmark
Always House (Flinders, Melbourne)
Designed by Kennedy Nolan
Crafting a home on a breathtaking site is a tricky dance of making the most out of stunning views without falling into the trap of those one-view, glass box designs. Always House, by Kennedy Nolan, is a cozy getaway, low on energy needs but high on comfort through the seasons, and perfectly in tune with its lush surroundings and the shifting sun and winds.
Beautreillis (Paris, France)
Designed by Studiovlach
Dating back to the early 20th century, this Parisian apartment has been completely transformed to blend contemporary and ethnic designs, showcasing PARSA publishing house's debut furniture collection. (I’m a huge fan of those coffee tables.)
FLOCKHILL Homestead (Arthur's Pass, New Zealand)
Designed by Warren & Mahoney
FLOCKHILL Homestead is inspired by the area's rich agricultural heritage, balancing a restrained material palette to create a modern, environmentally-immersive retreat.
Arrive or depart via the TranzAlpine Train, or take a chopper over the patchwork of the Canterbury Plains, the braided river of the Waimakariri river, the snowy peaks of the Alps and the lush beech forests of the valleys.
ShineMaker Residence (Wilson, Wyoming)
Designed by CLB Architects
Nestled among the wild terrain of the Tetons, CLB’s ShineMaker Residence is a modern creative retreat, featuring a main house, guest house, and writer's studio, each of which is designed to emphasize their surroundings.
Speargrass House (Queenstown, New Zealand)
Designed by Arent&Pyke + Sumich Chaplin Architects
Tucked into Queenstown's landscape, Speargrass House melds steel, stone, and timber as a nod to the region’s traditional homes. It offers a fresh take on a country home; I love the careful balance between refined and practical, yet cozy and beautiful.
Kander House (Primrose Hill, London, England)
Designed by Jamie Fobert Architects
Jamie Fobert Architects transforms this once-structurally-unsound Victorian townhouse into a modern family home with the addition of a concrete figure.
Hefei 1953 Juxing Grain Post Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore (Heifi, China)
Designed by SU Architects
A historic granary turned cultural landmark, blending architectural innovation with the building's historical essence.
Chernyi Cooperative Coffee Roasters (Belgrade, Serbia)
Designed by FREYA Architects
Led by a desire to transform a historic space into a modern environment, FREYA’s latest project encourages community and connection over coffee, all while contributing to the preservation of Belgrade’s brutalist architectural legacy.
About Linear Magazine
I spend countless hours crawling the web for interesting design and architecture. And, if you’re subscribed to this newsletter you’re probably the type of person who does that too.
My goal with Linear is to introduce you to themes you might not have considered, trends you might not have noticed, and opportunities you should experience balancing depth of content with approachability and “plain talk.”
Every couple weeks, I’ll highlight ten projects that made an impact on me, and I’ll feature a few you can experience in the real world – that’s where the magic happens.
If you have a project you think might be worth highlighting, let me know at submissions@linear-magazine.com, or send Linear a message on Twitter.
Linear is for the Architecturally Curious.
